King Charles III has become patron of the MCC.

Lord’s received a letter from Buckingham Palace earlier this week to mark the first anniversary of the coronation.

The King has been a member of the MCC since 1975, the year of his presidency of the Lord’s Taverners.

The late Queen was patron of the MCC for seventy years, succeeding George VI in the role. Her grandfather, George V. Charles, then Prince of Wales, was made an honorary life member in 2014.

“The club’s strong ties with the Royal Family are a source of enormous pride, and we are pleased to share the news that His Majesty The King will become Patron of MCC,” said Guy Lavender, CEO and Secretary of MCC.

“Cricket is one of Britain’s most enduring exports and as a club we dedicate significant funds and resources to nurturing the game among young people, both at home and abroad, to ensure our sport continues for generations to come prosper.”

Meanwhile, plans at Lord’s for a £61.8 million redevelopment of the Allen and Tavern Stands have been approved after being approved by MCC members last week.

The move will increase the ground capacity by 1,100 seats, with the Allen Stand being completely demolished and rebuilt with an additional tier, while a fourth tier will be added to the existing Tavern Stand.

Construction will take place between the end of the current season and 2027.

Earlier this month, former Bank of England governor Mervyn King was appointed the next MCC president.
