Phillies reveal rotation plans for the weekend against Marlins – Phillies Nation

The Philadelphia Phillies will bring baseball’s best record to Miami this weekend as they play a three-game set at LoanDepot Park against the lowly Marlins, who are off to a miserable 10-29 start. In theory, the Phillies should beat the Fish, solidifying their 26-12 start to the season.

Manager Rob Thomson revealed before Wednesday afternoon’s loss to the San Francisco Giants that the Phillies will remain in their rotation this weekend. starting Ranger Suárez, Taijuan Walker and Zack Wheeler against the Marlins.

There was some thought that the Phillies might consider using six starters in the rotation this time around, as they will be playing 10 days in a row after an off day on Thursday. At least for this weekend, the rotation order remains unchanged.

It’s certainly possible that Spencer Turnbull makes a start sometime this week when the Phillies will have a four-game home-and-home series with the New York Mets. If that happens, you’d think the Phillies would still have Wheeler, Suárez and Aaron Nola at the normal four rest spots. Wheeler seemed especially frustrated with the extra day of rest after powering through a start against the Los Angeles Angels on May 1.

“I think it was more routine this time, having more days of rest and not being as sharp, I think that’s part of it,” Wheeler said. “Some points in the season you probably need, but it’s just another day of trying to keep the rhythm that I’ve had, just another day of trying to keep it in sync.”

It could also be that the Phillies don’t feel like they need a sixth starter, as they’ve only gone through the rotation for 10 games in a row and are using Turnbull in relief, possibly as a walk-on with Cristopher Sánchez. There will be longer stretches without an off day later this season, and the Phillies will need Turnbull. And if Walker or Sánchez struggle, it could lead to an opening for Turnbull to rejoin the rotation, as well as an injury to one of the five current starters.
