MM 5.9: Two Maryland men’s lacrosse players selected in the 2024 PLL Draft

Two Maryland lacrosse players were selected Tuesday night in the 2024 Premier Lacrosse League Draft. Senior defenseman Ajax Zappitello was selected No. 3 overall by the Maryland Whipsnakes – the second straight year a Maryland defenseman was taken No. 3 overall (Brett Makar) and the Graduate faceoff specialist Luke Wierman was selected No. 25 overall by the Denver Outlaws.

Zappitello, the 2024 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, has started all 13 games this season and recorded a team-high 20 turnovers caused, 28 ground balls and two goals. He is a two-time All-American selection and the second defenseman in program history to wear the legendary No. 1 jersey.

Wierman has etched himself into the Maryland record books with what he has accomplished over the past four years. He holds the program record for most career faceoff wins (809) and faceoff wins in a single season (298). This season, Wierman has won 172 of 287 faceoffs while collecting 94 groundballs.

The Terps welcome Princeton to College Park this Saturday for the first round of the NCAA tournament.
