Major funding boost for Laois sports clubs

There is good news for sports clubs and organizations across Laois with the announcement of €388,415 for sports equipment projects.

All 19 Laois groups that applied for funding have been approved for a grant under the ‘equipment only’ stream.

The largest allocation was €65,806, which has been allocated to Laois Hockey Club to create a hockey culture in Laois.

Other successful projects include equipment for Banríon Gaels Camogie Club Club (€65,077), an automatic robotic mower for Portlaoise Golf Club (€40,000) and an automatic mower for playing fields at Clonad GAA (€33,890). See below for the full list of projects.

Sean Fleming TD, Secretary of State, said the grants awarded represent a very high proportion of the cost of the specific equipment requested by each group.

“I was pleased to speak directly to Minister Byrne in relation to each of the Laois equipment grant applications. I asked him to provide the maximum equipment grant to all Laois applicants. This grant announcement is great news for these Laois groups and their communities. I look forward to these Laois groups acquiring this equipment as soon as possible,” said Minister Fleming.

“A further announcement will be made as soon as possible for clubs and organizations that have applied for funding under the ‘capital projects’ category and clubs that have applied under the ‘capital and equipment projects’ category. These applications are now being examined and I ask the Minister to approve them once this has been completed.”

“Thank you to the dedicated volunteers in all the clubs and organizations in Laois who work very hard in their communities to provide wonderful amenities and sporting facilities right on our doorstep,” Minister Fleming added.

Deputy Charlie Flanagan commented: “Active involvement in sport not only helps keep young people healthy, but also builds confidence and independence and promotes team building.

“I know that the Laois clubs and organizations that receive this funding today will make great use of it for the benefit of local communities.”
