Komphela is backing Arrows to represent Bafana in the future

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has defended his striker Lungelo Nguse for a future call-up to the South African national team, Bafana Bafana.

Following Golden Arrows’ 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns, Komphela was asked about Nguse’s performance and his potential for future international selection.

Taking a cautious approach, Komphela expressed his belief in Nguse’s capabilities. He said he has almost everything a striker needs and has the potential to serve the nation.

He praised him for troubling Sundowns’ seasoned centre-backs in Mosa Lebusa and Mothobi Mvala. Mosa Lebusa was even shown a red card for a last-man challenge on Nguse, who was one of the standout players in the match.

Nguse has scored six goals in 22 games across all competitions in his first season in Arrows colours. He joined the club at the start of the season after parting ways with AmaTuks.

STEVE KOMPHELA SAYS LUNGELO NGUSE HAS POTENTIAL TO WEAR A BAFAN SHIRT IN THE FUTURE

“I’m very cautious about that, but I like the question,” Komphela said.

“And I’m tempted to say yes. If I said that… I said the same thing about Mabasa, I said the same thing about a lot of other players, but it came across as misunderstood.

“But when I look at this Nguse boy, I think he is something else. He was giving the big boys problems here and you can see that Lebusa must have sensed him, Mvala must have said: ‘Okay, who is this? Number 40 Nguse’.

“So on that basis I agree with the question: he has capabilities. He’s 26, you know, in South Africa we say you’re still young, but he should be playing.

“It’s good to have that, you have Nguse, you have Mabasa, you have whoever, whoever. Let them raise their hands, but he has ability.

“All I can say is positioning: top, physically, strong, technically, finishes, mentally, he knows his stuff, he’s a humble man.

“So all these areas where you say what I want from the striker from a technical point of finishing, he has it. Is he a calm person from a mentality perspective? Does he recognize moments in the game? He has everything you need.

“We can only help him increase his confidence, he will be something different for South Africa.”
