Craigieburn Road Upgrade – May 2024

May 14, 2024

Milestones achieved

The transformation of Craigieburn Road continues with the newly improved Waterview Boulevard now open as a fully signalized intersection. Motorists enjoy more reliable journeys, while pedestrians and cyclists benefit from safer crossings.

The Waterview Boulevard intersection is one of the final stretches of the 2.5km stretch along Craigieburn Road between Aitken Boulevard and Mickleham Road to be completed. The western end of the project now features additional lanes and new signalized intersections, which will improve the way people move around the area.

The recently completed shared use path will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely along Craigieburn Road. These new paths now connect all the way from Craigieburn Junction shopping center to Mickleham Road.

Work continues outside DS Aitken Reserve

As we continue to make progress, most of the remaining work will take place on the north side of Craigieburn Road, between Aitken Boulevard and the Hume Highway.

Other works include:

  • approximately 4,000 meters of drainage and construction of walking and cycling paths
  • constructing the northbound lanes along Craigieburn Road
  • upgrading intersections
  • installing street lighting and signage
  • green areas and traffic lights.

Improving drainage along Craigieburn Road has been an important aspect and has required a huge effort during the upgrade. We have installed large underground pipes to reduce flooding during rainstorms and keep rainwater away from Craigieburn Road and surrounding properties.

The intersection of Craigieburn Road and Cimberwood Drive is expected to reopen in mid-2024, when we will begin upgrade work at the Lygon Drive and Hanson Road intersections. While we are working on the northbound lanes of Craigieburn Road, we have changed access to some local streets. Access to Craigieburn Road Service Road is available via Glade Avenue and Dorchester Street.

McDonalds, Craigieburn Shops (7Eleven, Red Rooster, Manoush, Papa Johns, Alakram Restaurant, Taste of Amritsar) and the Craigieburn Health Service are all still open, so support your local traders by shopping and eating local!

Making progress

With the Craigieburn Road upgrade steadily taking shape, motorists will be using the new north and southbound lanes at the Aitken Boulevard intersection.

Dorchester Street has recently reopened following major works to upgrade the intersection and install new drainage. We have reopened with a temporary roundabout to keep traffic flowing through the intersection while we complete work in the area. The fully signalized intersection is expected to open by the end of 2024.

During the school holidays we completed work on the underground water supplies at the Bridgewater Road junction, which reopened in time for the second term.

We thank the local community and businesses for their patience during the works.

Meeting with the community

CRG popup

We’ve been out and about with pop-ups at Craigieburn Central, sharing information about works and access changes.

We heard from nearly 150 community members, many of whom are looking forward to the new lanes.

What’s left?

Work on the project is expected to be completed in 2025.

To minimize disruption to the local community, we will continue to carry out disruptive works at night, so we can take advantage of when the roads are quietest. There will be nightly closures in between Sunday and Thursday evenings by 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM (reopening during the day).

Activities at night usually include installing or connecting traffic lights, moving barriers to adjust the lanes or asphalt work where we have to close part of the road.

We will keep you informed of the progress of the work through signage. To stay informed about upcoming construction or closures, visit Big Build’s disruption page or subscribe to weekly updates.
