Cakes and cricket in the fold for church and club in Hurst – Wokingham.Today

A cake sale will be held by Hurst Cricket Club and St Nicholas Church, Hurst, in the club’s grounds on Wokingham Road this Saturday, May 11 from 9.30am to 11.30am.

The proceeds are divided between the church and the club.

Saturday is also the day of the first home cricket match at the Hurst ground since the merger of Hurst Cricket Club and Rangers Cricket Club in the Wokingham area to run a joint season in 2024.

After a difficult season in 2023, Hurst cricketers said the scheme would safeguard cricket in the village. For the Rangers cricketers it means that they no longer have to rent grounds.

The cricketers will later vote on whether to make the arrangement permanent. Players from both clubs worked together to prepare the ground for the new season.

The merged club has three Saturday sides, two in Divisions 3 and 8 of the Thames Valley Cricket League and one in Division 1 of the Berkshire Cricket League.

There is also cricket for seniors, which is more social with Sunday and weekday teams.

The senior training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Hurst nets,

The youth section, All Stars to Under 15, trains on Friday evenings with families and everyone invited to enjoy the cricket, barbecue and bar.

Everyone is welcome at the senior and junior training courses.

The club is delighted to receive the Hurst Show and Country Fayre grant for new cricket stumps to replace the old ones which are ‘well beyond their prime’.

Club treasurer Steve Hills said: “Receiving a grant from a local community organization has been a real boost.

“It is only through the support of our local community that Hurst Cricket Club can continue to offer cricket in the heart of the village.”
