Scott Flemming returns as Indians men’s basketball coach

In an unexpected but almost unanimously welcomed announcement, celebrated former Indian men’s national team coach Scott Flemming has returned for a second stint.

Flemming, who held the same position between November 2012 and April 2015, until recently worked at NBA India as technical director.

Flemming is perhaps one of the most successful coaches in Indian basketball history and has left an unparalleled legacy. During his two-and-a-half year coaching stint in India, Coach Flemming brought about tremendous improvement in the Indian men’s players and the team’s playing style. He was the catalyst for India’s historic victory over China in the 5th FIBA Asia Cup and his gold medal performance in the 3rd Lusofonia Games, defeating Angola in the final.

Flemming’s hiring comes weeks after Ekalavyas broke the story of the closure of NBA Academy India. Given the great successes in his first go-round, expectations of Flemming in his second stint will of course be high.

Flemming has shown that he is an excellent fit for India’s culture, having lived in and embraced the country’s often bewildering diversity for more than eight years.

However, basketball fans in India will do well to be patient as Flemming’s first term was backed by the financial burden of IMG-Reliance until 2015, leading to better facilities and comfort for the national team players.

Flemming’s appointment marks the end of Serbia’s Veselin Matic at the helm of affairs. Initially appointed in 2019Matic’s contract was extended for three years in 2021.

Despite Matic’s extensive and proven referencesand genuine intentions, as the men’s 5v5 team showed significant drop in the rankings during this period. Matic initially attributed this to COVID, a continued lack of competitiveness due to the lack of a high-quality domestic competition and the unavailability of key players. In addition to these factors, Matic’s tenure was also hampered by administrative problems arising from the controversial transfer of power from one faction of BFI to the next.
