Easterns claim a five-point win over Sables

Bowlers from the East and West recently went head-to-head for the annual clash between the two districts.

Organized in April, the Eastern seniors hosted the Sables at the Edenvale Bowls Club.

Raymond Pieters, a committee member of the Edenvale Bowling Club, explained that the Eastern Seniors are men’s bowlers who are over 60 years of age.

They come from various clubs in the Ekurhuleni Bowling District.

He said the Sables are following the same format, but west of Johannesburg.

“These two parties have been clashing on a reciprocal basis for more than twenty years,” Pieters said.

Each division consisted of 12 teams of four bowlers with a total of 96 bowlers.

The competition is divided into two sessions.

Pieters said the pre-lunch session is a random draw of East vs Sables, played over 18 Ends.

The afternoon session, played over 15 Ends, follows where the winners face off against the winners.

Each game is worth two points to the winners.

“This year the competition was as close as ever,” said Pieters.

“Going into the lunch break, Sables were eight games ahead to four and Easterns were virtually out of contention.”

Pieters said the Easterns were having none of that as at the end of the game the scores were tied at 24 games each.
Easterns were declared winners based on batting average.

Pieters said there was only five points difference between the two teams.

“The fantastic camaraderie between the east and west neighbors was fantastic. Sharing a cold drink and exchanging bowls stories after a hot day on the greens is something unique to bowls.”
