A man accused of killing three surfers in Mexico allegedly told his girlfriend ‘I

A man arrested in connection with the deaths of two Australian surfers and their American friend in Mexico has reportedly admitted to his girlfriend’s murders.

The suspect, identified under Mexican law only by his first name Jesus Gerardo, allegedly told the woman he had “fucked three gringos,” prosecutors allege.

The bodies of brothers Callum and Jake Robinson were found in a remote well after they were killed by car thieves during a surfing and camping trip in Baja California, across the border from San Diego.

The brothers, 33 and 30 respectively, were found dead along with their friend, US citizen Jack Carter Rhoad.

Prosecutors had identified three people as potential suspects in the killings, two of whom were caught with methamphetamine. One of them, a woman, had a mobile phone belonging to the victims with her when she was caught.

Prosecutors said the two were being held pending drug charges but remain suspects in the killings. They have been identified as 23-year-old Ari Gisell and Cristian Alejandro Garcia.

Jesus was the third man arrested and is currently charged with a crime equivalent to kidnapping, but that was before the bodies were found. The charge is expected to be upgraded to murder soon.

Prosecutors said he has a criminal record that includes drug trafficking, car theft and domestic violence. He has yet to enter a plea on charges related to the disappearance of the three men.

According to Australian news network ABC, Jesus, also known as ‘El Kekas’, appeared in court in the Mexican city of Ensenada on Wednesday.

He wore an orange jumpsuit and white sneakers with his hands and feet handcuffed and chained to the floor, the outlet reported.

The judge read the state’s case, in which Jesus’ then-girlfriend, Ari, was a prosecution witness. Prosecutors allege Ari Gisell, whose last name was also suppressed, told authorities that her then-partner admitted to killing the three men.

The court heard she told investigators her former partner arrived at her home on Sunday and told her: “I’ve ruined three gringos”. She said, “What do you mean?” to which he replied: “I killed them”.

Prosecutors alleged he then gave her a cell phone and said, “Look what I got for you,” before taking her outside to show her the new tires on her car. They were allegedly stolen from the trio’s car.

Mexican authorities previously said they believed the three men were targeted for the tapes, along with cash and electronic valuables.

Chief prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez said Sunday that she believed the killers were driving by and saw the surfers’ pickup and tents, and that they wanted to steal the tires. But “when (the foreigners) came up and caught them, they definitely resisted,” she added.

After the murders, the alleged thieves went to what she called “a place that is extremely difficult to reach” and dumped the bodies in a well they knew and covered the hole with planks.

“It was literally almost impossible to find it,” said Ms. Andrade Ramírez. She added that it took two hours to winch the bodies out of the pit.

A fourth body was found with the young men. It is believed to be the remains of a farmer who owned the property and went missing two weeks earlier. His death is not believed to be related to the case, authorities said.

Ms. Andrade Ramírez said investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the same suspects dumped the fourth body in the well as part of a previous crime.

On Tuesday, Callum and Jake’s mother Debra Robinson paid a touching tribute to her sons on a beach in San Diego.

“Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” Mrs. Robinson said, fighting back tears. “They were young men enjoying their passion together: surfing.”

She noted that her son Callum “considered the United States his second home” and that Jake loved surfing so much that as a doctor he enjoyed working in hospitals near the beach.

“Jake’s passion was surfing, and it was no coincidence that many of the hospitals he worked at were close to surfing beaches,” she said.

Choking back tears, Mrs. Robinson delivered a final message that coincided with her sons’ adventurous lifestyle. “Live bigger, shine brighter and love harder in their memories,” she said.
