The Ginebra-Magnolia quarterfinal will be played at the Rizal Coliseum

FROM the old ULTRA to the Smart Araneta Coliseum to the Mall of Asia Arena to the Philippine Arena, the legendary rivalry between Barangay Ginebra and Magnolia will revisit one of the oldest playing arenas in the country.

‘Manila Clasico’ is heading to the Rizal Memorial Coliseum as the PBA will hold its quarterfinals at the 90-year-old arena for the first time ever.

The Kings-Hotshots showdown will take place on Saturday at 6:15 p.m., with second-seeded Barangay Ginebra just needing to beat seventh-seeded Magnolia to advance to the semifinals.

Over the years, the Ginebra-Magnolia rivalry has played in front of record crowds at the ULTRA (now Philsports Arena) all the way to the Philippine Arena, where it once played in front of an estimated crowd of over 23,000 fans during the 2017 Christmas Day match in the world’s largest indoor venue in Because, Bulacan.

The December 25, 2015 showdown between the rival teams saw more than 22,000 people flock to the Mall of Asia Arena for the Christmas treat.

Built in 1934, the Rizal Memorial Coliseum seats 6,000 to 8,000 people and in its early years was home to the NCAA, UAAP, the defunct MICAA, and for a while the PBA.

By the way, two PBA teams, which have a long basketball history behind them, can also find their roots this weekend in the historic playing venue in the heart of Pablo Ocampo St (formerly Vito Cruz).

San Miguel and Meralco, who previously played for Rizal during their stint in MICAA (the predecessor to the PBA), will both see action during the back-to-back dates held at the iconic playing field.

The top-seeded Beermen will battle eight-seeded Terrafirma Dyip ahead of the Ginebra-Magnolia match on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Meralco, meanwhile, faces NLEX in Game 2 of their best-of-three series on Sunday.

This is actually the second time this year that the 48-year-old league’s matches will be played at the Rizal Coliseum.

Previously, the venue hosted a double header on March 16 featuring Blackwater versus Terrafirma and Magnolia-Converge in the first PBA matches played at Rizal Coliseum since the 1980s.
