ANOTHER CUPSET: NYCFC II surprises Switchbacks to reach Open Cup Round of 16

Overview:

New York City FC II, the last MLS NEXT Pro team in the league, continued its magical run Wednesday night in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at St. John’s University’s Belson Stadium.

QUEENS, NY – New York City FC II, the last MLS NEXT Pro team in the league, continued its magical run Wednesday night in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at St. John’s University’s Belson Stadium.

The Cityzens recorded their third straight victory while clinching their second straight cup set, via a 1-0 victory over Colorado Switchbacks FC (USL Championship) in the Round of 32.

Six minutes after the opening kick, Jonathan Jimenez made a brilliant run into the penalty area before depositing the ball past goalkeeper Luis Zamudio for what turned out to be the only goal.

Jimenez, who scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 second round win over MLS NEXT Pro rivals Red Bulls II on April 2, has scored four Open Cup goals and six appearances in all competitions this season.

The visitors played the final two minutes of regular time and five minutes of injury time with ten men after midfielder Aidan Rocha was shown a double yellow card for a foul and dissent.

Goalkeeper Tomas Romero scored the clean sheet.

NYCFC II also defeated Hartford Athletic (USL Championship) 3-2 in overtime in the third round on April 17.
