Focus on the Owalo Invitational tournament now that league play has been suspended

All Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) matches scheduled for this weekend have been canceled to pave way for the first Eliud Owalo Foundation Invitational tournament.

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Match Secretary Joseph Amoko yesterday said United States International (USIU) court matches have been postponed to next weekend.

“We have decided to cancel all league matches for this weekend to make way for the biggest tournament on our calendar,” Amoko said.

“We want all the focus to be on this event because all the teams are looking forward to it. They go there to enjoy themselves and give the best of themselves.”

Amoko reminded all teams that when the competition resumes next weekend, there will be no distractions and this will continue until the final games of the regular season. “After this big tournament we will go straight to the quarter-finals of the BBF League,” he said.

The Chairman of the Eliud Owako Foundation (EOF) Tournament Committee, Ronny Owino, said his team has been working round the clock to make this inaugural event a memorable one in the annals of the sport.

He said: “We are completely ready now. We have everything set up and ready for the three-day event. The matches have ended and we have also appointed the seventeen referees who will take charge of the matches.”

Owino, a former national team player and coach, urged fans to come out in large numbers to watch the event.

Owino is also the chairman of the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA).

Leading the 13 teams that will compete for the Sh1.3 million prize money are the national champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men’s and women’s teams.

Other teams include Nairobi City Thunder, Equity Bank Dumas, USIU Tigers, Strathmore University Blades and Ulinzi Warriors.

The women’s category will feature Equity Bank Hawks, Zetech University Sparks, USIU Flames, Strathmore University Swords and Storms. There are three opening matches on the card at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang’ata on Friday from 5pm.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday at Lang’ata gymnasium and Nyayo National Stadium. Lang’ata will host the third/fourth play-off matches and finals.
