Penn State wrestling: National champion Greg Kerkvliet returns

Penn State wrestling is bringing back another of its national champions for the 2024-2025 season.

Heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet announced his return on his Instagram account on Wednesday evening. The post simply said: “I’ll be back!”

Kerkvliet won his first individual title this season, beating Michigan’s Lucas Davison 13-4 in a major decision. His victory capped an undefeated season in which he failed to earn bonus points for just six games, while only one game had a margin of less than five points.

His return marks yet another big decision for Penn State after Carter Starocci announced he would return to chase his fifth individual national title and Beau Bartlett announced he would return to earn his first. The team also returns a 157-pound national champion in Levi Haines, along with 165-pound finalist Mitchell Mesenbrink.

The Nittany Lions Project is looking to once again have by far the best team in the country as they attempt to capture their 12th national title during head coach Cael Sanderson’s tenure. They return starters in every weight class except 184 pounds (Bernie Truax Jr.) and 197 pounds (Aaron Brooks).
