How can both CSK and RCB qualify for the IPL 2024 play-offs?

Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured crucial wins in the 2024 edition of the IPL on a double-header Sunday as they kept their chances of qualification alive

RCB defeated Delhi Capitals by 47 runs as they not only stayed in the hunt themselves but also destroyed all the qualification chances of the Delhi team, who were without their captain Rishabh Pant in the Sunday clash

RCB now have 12 points in the pot and need to win their next match against CSK to stay alive in the race for the play-offs

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, took advantage of Simarjeet Singh’s stellar bowling spell to win against Rajasthan Royals and end their league match at home with five wins.

With the win against the Royals, CSK has already collected 14 points and a win will likely take them to the play-offs, but even if they lose to RCB in their last league match, they can qualify.

However, for such a permutation or combination to fall into place, both RCB and CSK will have to hope and pray that Sunrisers Hyderabad lose both their remaining matches.

Sunrisers Hyderabad already have 14 points in the bag and with two home matches to go, the Orange Army will take their chances to get 16, if not 18 points when they take on the two teams on the lower rung, Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings.

So if SRH drops both matches, CSK and RCB have a chance to qualify on 14 points with a better NRR. But what about Lucknow Super Giants, another side who can get 16 points as of now?

Lucknow Super Giants will be down and out after that loss against the Sunrisers and the subsequent Sanjiv Goenka fiasco. If LSG wins both matches, there could be a three-way war between SRH and CSK. So, they will have to hope for an RCB win against CSK if they win against Delhi and Mumbai in their remaining two matches

So CSK are in a much better position than RCB because if they win, they should be in the play-offs given their NRR. But if RCB also wants to be in the race, SRH will have to lose the remaining games and LSG will have to lose at least one because even if they get to 14, their NRR has taken a massive beating in the last two games.

It is proving to be an exciting IPL season with the race to the finish for the play-offs. Both CSK and RCB can qualify, but at least four results must go as planned. With RCB only able to reach 14, they are in a very desperate position but make it five wins in a row. It should be a cracker!!
