Victoria among BC communities to receive more electric buses and infrastructure

BC Transit has announced that they will distribute 66 new electric buses and provide additional electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to a number of cities in need of improvements.

Currently, the electric buses are on order from two suppliers, Nova Bus and New Flyer, with funding coming from BC Transit and the Canadian government.

In addition to all these buses, nine municipalities will receive upgrades to their EV infrastructure.

The infrastructure upgrades will take the form of 134 new electric bus charging points and will be installed over the next two years.

The cities receiving these upgrades are Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, the Regional District of Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Whistler.

“Innovation in our public transportation system is helping us create a greener future for everyone,” said Rob Fleming, BC Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“As we electrify our transit fleet, more people will be able to make affordable cleaner transportation choices. BC’s communities will soon see new electric infrastructure for their transportation needs.”

BC Transit says bus assignments of the 66 on order will be confirmed as projects progress.

According to BC Transit, the buses will be delivered in mid-2026.

Funding for this endeavor was announced in 2023 and totals approximately $395.5 million.

These buses and infrastructure are being purchased to reduce BC Transit’s greenhouse gas emissions.
