BAVIERA, Leonard (Len) – Obituary – Collingwood

He passed away peacefully on June 28, 2023 in Collingwood, Ontario, succumbing to end-stage Parkinson’s disease.

Born on February 1, 1946 in Aprigliano, Cosenza, Italy, to Angelina and Francesco (Rocco) Baviera, he emigrated with his family to Canada in 1953 and settled in Hamilton, Ontario.

Len was the loving husband and soulmate of Pat Baviera (nee McChesney) for over 36 years. Together Len and Pat shared a rich social life, enjoying many activities including golf, squash, bowling, skiing, croquet, tennis and wintering in Sarasota and the Villages. He will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, support of medical causes (Life Beat and Cardiac Ski Day), and his deep compassion and love for his family and the many friendships he built over the years. A true gentleman and ‘man of his word’, Len’s quiet nature had a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to know him. Always putting the needs of others before his own, unless he was craving a Diet Coke or Tim Horton’s coffee. Len’s empathy and generosity were boundless.

Len graduated from St. Augustine’s College in 1969 with a BA in Theology. He dedicated his working life to children at risk. He began his career at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society and later at NAIRN Family Homes, culminating in the creation of his own foster care company, Reaching Out Family Homes. For over 30 years, as Executive Director of Reaching Out, Len has mentored and developed a strong and dedicated staff that provided exceptional support to foster children and families from several provincial children’s aid societies. Len was grateful for the dedication and commitment of his foster parents and staff.

Len will be deeply missed by his wife Pat, sister Teresa Oliverio and his many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, great-nephews, great-nephews and cousins on both sides of the family; as well as his closest friends who considered him family and his many colleagues.
