Making it through the NCAA Regionals is a tall order, especially for an individual. The top five teams out of the twelve – and every individual on those teams – in each region advance to the NCAA Championships. And there is still one spot left for everyone else.

For the second year in a row, McCauley beat them all.

The Gophers sophomore fired a 7-under round of 65 in the third and final round at Auburn University Club in Alabama on Thursday to finish tied for second for the region at 2-under overall. The tournament winner – Anna Davis of Auburn, who finished the tournament at 5 under – and the two other golfers with whom McCauley finished in second place were all part of teams that advanced to the NCAA Finals.

This means that McCauley is the best person left and will join them all there. The NCAA Championships will take place May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California. This marks McCauley’s second straight appearance in the final stages of her second collegiate season.

For the second year in a row, McCauley stumbled out of the gate at Regionals. This time she shot a 5-over, 77.

Last year, she was six behind the qualifying position after Round 1 and closed 67-68 to advance to the NCAA Championships.

This time she delivered another masterpiece in the final round. She birdied seven holes – including No. 18 – with no bogeys. Her round of 65 was four shots better than what anyone else had shot all week. Those kinds of scores simply didn’t exist.

And yet she made it happen.
