Yashasvi Jaiswal’s old coach Jwala Singh reveals which position the youngster should bat in the T20 World Cup

The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup is just around the corner as the game’s shortest format travels to the West Indies and the US for this year’s edition. The two hosts are uncharted territories for the majority of players traveling for the tournament, raising questions about the changes required to play on such wickets.

In an exclusive chat with IANS, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s coach, father figure and mentor, Jwala Singh explained why he believes the young Indian prodigy will “open the innings”, for the Indian side.

The West Indies may not be the most visited destination for tours and tournaments, but it is the country where the young Jaiswal made his debut in India. The 22-year-old made his debut at the Windsor Park in Rosea, Dominica, where he played a stellar innings of 171 runs to guide India to a dominant victory in a Test match which they won by an innings and 141 runs.

He also boasts an excellent record in T20Is, a format in which he has only opened as a batsman. In the sixteen innings he has played for India, Jaiswal has scored four fifties and one century, along with a strike rate of 161.93.

“This debate was echoed earlier in Test cricket too, when he went to the West Indies. A lot of people said he would play at number 3 because (Cheteshwar) Pujara was out of the team and that was the only spot. But I believe when he played, the team management put a lot of faith in him… Shubman Gill played at third position. From what I know of him, I think he would like to open the innings and let things rest. The team management, captain and coaches will decide,” Jwala told IANS.

He also spoke at length about how he believes the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the main reasons behind the excellent mental development of Yashasvi’s game as it has allowed the explosive left-handed batsman to ‘grow into quite a thing’. matured and he (Jaiswal) now knows how to adapt in different formats of the game and also how to help his team in different situations.”

“He definitely took his time in the beginning, starting with Mumbai Indians U-16, India U-19. He scored just 20 runs in his Ranji debut and 44 in his Vijay Hazare debut, so he is definitely taking his time. I think since he started playing in the IPL, he has matured quite a bit over the last two seasons and now knows how to adapt to the different formats of the game and also how to help his team in different situations.

“The World Cup is a huge stage for him and if Ravi Shastri has praised him, he must have certainly observed his game before commenting. I hope, as a coach, father figure and mentor, that he plays good cricket and ends the ICC trophy drought that the Indian cricket team has had. I will be very happy,” he said.
