Eugenie Bouchard wins a tennis match for the first time since November at the ITF tournament in Zephyrhills

Eugenie Bouchard decided to leave tennis behind at the end of 2023 and become a professional pickleball player. But she is back on the tennis court and winning.

Bouchard earned an opening victory over Justina Mikulskyte 6-1, 6-2 and reached the second round at an ITF tournament in Zephyrhills, a W75 green clay tournament. The former Wimbledon finalist lives in Florida, so the tournament is close to her. But what her future ambitions are remains to be seen.

It was Bouchard’s first match on a tennis court since she played in the Billie Jean King Cup won by Canada in November. Technically, she also played at the Netflix Slam in March, but that’s more of an exhibition than an actual match. If I win in just under an hour and a half, it will be interesting to see where Bouchard goes next.

Fanny Stollar or Maya Joint await in the second round with Kayla Day, who is in the top 100 of the WTA rankings and looms as the top seed in her section, and they could play in the quarterfinals if Bouchard makes it that far. But overall, these are positive signs for the Canadian so far.

Her ball striking and how well she played were praised in the second set. All of this considering she hasn’t played in a while is all positive. Albeit at a lower level, so difficult to estimate. But that can often prove to be a bit of a banana peel, especially for former top names returning to the court.

A year after a run where she tried to qualify for major tournaments and then made a pickleball switch, could we see a return to form for Bouchard heading into the second half of 2024? Time will tell.
