This year, wrestling made its way to La Vernia Junior High for its first competitive season.

Starting with 134 athletes, the interest and energy was high. The athletes practiced hard and learned different techniques. All athletes practiced for four weeks in preparation for the first tournament at Pieper High School against four other schools.

At this first tournament, La Vernia brought home two gold medals and achieved many other top-three finishes.

The athletes’ focus and intensity in practice increased as they prepared for the final tournament hosted by Smithson Valley High School.

On May 4, 25 boys and girls from seventh and eighth grades registered to participate and took home 18 medals – four gold, seven silver and seven bronze – making La Vernia one of the tournament’s top three teams .

•First Place (Gold) — Aaron Crutcher, Kameron Casas, Jullyanna Ruiz and Connor Nevill

•Second Place (Silver) — Rogelio Vazquez, Dillon Rappmund, Rylen Blalock, Kaysen Turner, Ashlynn West, Lucille Odom and Jonathan Chandler

•Third Place (Bronze) — Corbin Simmonds, Kassie Berry, Colby Lentz, Holynn Johnson, Rogelio Vasquez, John Gawlik and Serena Gustamante.

In total, the Junior High Bear wrestling team wrestled 145 matches and won 62.

The future looks bright for La Vernia wrestling as this program continues to grow and develop.
