Huddersfield Giants secure talented striker

Huddersfield Giants have announced that Sam Hewitt has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

Hewitt has signed a contract until the end of the 2027 season and will receive the number twelve shirt for the first time in 2024.

The forward made his debut in a draw against Leeds Rhinos at the John Smith’s Stadium in 2018, and scored his first try in a defeat to Wigan a year later in 2019.

He was loaned out to Workington Town, Halifax Panthers and Wakefield Trinity before making 14 appearances for the Huddersfield Giants in 2023.

He has since become a key member of Ian Watson’s squad, only dropping out of the team after suffering a serious injury in training.

He is expected to be sidelined again in the coming weeks.

They have already secured the services of young talents Sam Halsall and Harry Rushton for the future, and will be pleased to have another man in the side for years to come.

Hewitt excited about future at Huddersfield Giants

Speaking after signing the extension, Hewitt said: “I’m really looking forward to my future at the club, making good on getting it done and getting the 12 shirt this year. I want to consolidate my place among the thirteen and move forward in my career. .

“It’s huge that Watto (Ian Watson) has shown confidence in me by giving me a three-year contract. It’s a big boost for my self-confidence, I want to repay that confidence in my performance.

“I’ve been working hard in training after my injury. I’m now close to a return, so I hope I can put this setback behind me and get back to working and playing with the boys.”

Head coach Ian Watson spoke highly of Hewitt: “It’s obviously great to retain one of our own and someone who has made the step up through the whole system to a real first-team player.

“His development over the last few years has been excellent, it’s down to how hard he has worked on his game, his physical form and his understanding of the game in attack and defense. – People like to play with him because of how hard he works for the team.

“Sam is a player you enjoy coaching and having around you. He gets on well with everyone and we look forward to seeing him continue his development at the club in the coming years.”
