Cougar boys lacrosse is off to another impressive start

ROCHESTER – After finishing the 2023 regular season with an undefeated record, the Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School boys lacrosse team is off to another strong start in 2024.

The Cougars are 9-2 and six of their nine wins have come by margins of nine goals or more. Since the start of the 2022 season, the Cougars have won 44 games and lost just five.

Head coach Geno Busa said experience will be the biggest strength of the 10-senior program in 2024.

“Most of the roster has been on varsity since they were freshmen, so they know the system well and know each other’s tendencies,” Busa said.

After losing two straight games in April, Old Colony has responded with five straight wins to right the ship.

According to Busa, keeping opponents off the scoreboard has been a key to the Cougars’ success early in the season.

On the defensive side of the field, you can constantly hear the Cougars yelling at each other, especially goaltender Ryan Letendre.

“Ryan is a vocal leader both on and off the field,” Busa said. “Defensively, we have to communicate to make sure we’re all on the same page and playing team defense.”

Busa described his team’s defensive playing style as “physical” and frustrating for other teams.

The Cougars rode that style to victory against Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School on Monday, May 6, winning 5-1 at home.

After a scoreless first quarter, Old Colony scored two goals in the second and third quarters respectively, sending a shutout into the final frame.

Senior Luke Meelia capped the win with his second goal of the game with 9 minutes left to play.

“We were missing four key starters and I was very impressed with the way the players tried their best and showed mental toughness during an adverse situation,” Busa said. “Not having multiple impact players can make some people give up or throw in the towel, but we had guys who refused to give up and worked hard to win a horror game.”

The Cougars are coming off a Mayflower Athletic Conference title and a state professional championship in 2023, and Busa hopes the team can defend any crown and keep them in Old Colony for another year.
